While the recent recommendation by the Australian Productivity Commission seeking to lift the ban on parallel importation ultimately threatens to flood the country with cheap US and UK editions of books — the changes won’t take place for three years. At the moment it is still possible to get reasonably priced editions shipped from overseas. The biggest factor for Australians is, of course shipping. And while The Book Depository bookstores based in the UK and US offer free global shipping, they may not always be the best choice. For that, one can consult Booko.com, which aggregates price information from sites across the web and, of most importance to Aussies, figures in shipping and converts the price to Aussie dollars.
A search for the UK edition of Steig Larsson’s The Girl Who Played with Fire resulted in prices ranging from AUD$26.95 (BookDepository.co.uk) to AUD$59.95 (Gleebooks.com.au), so it pays to shop around.
