Next year, the Fundación El Libro will celebrate the 50th edition of the Buenos Aires International Book Fair, set to take place from April 23 to May 11, 2026, at the La Rural Exhibition Center. As part of its efforts to further internationalize Argentina’s most important cultural event, the Foundation unveiled the upcoming edition — complete with a new visual identity — during a presentation at the Frankfurter Buchmesse. The session featured Christian Rainone, president of Fundación El Libro; Ezequiel Martínez, the fair’s general director; and Michi Strausfeld, a German editor and long-time supporter of Latin American literature.
“We’re working hard to create a major meeting point for readers,” said Martínez, as he announced several of the initiatives planned for this milestone edition.
A New Format for the Opening and a Focus on Readers
With Peru as the guest of honor, the 2026 book fair will open differently than usual. Instead of the traditional single-author keynote speech, the event will begin with a conversation featuring three acclaimed Argentine writers: Gabriela Cabezón Cámara, Leila Guerriero, and Selva Almada.
Their participation will revisit the theme of the very first Buenos Aires Book Fair in 1975 — “From the Author to the Reader” — which has since become a defining motto of the event.
Rainone emphasized that the fair “would not exist without the authors who give it prestige, nor without the reading community that gives it greatness,” noting his surprise and delight at “the number of children and young people who attend each year.”
In 2024, the event surpassed the one-million visitor mark, reaching a total of 1,126,351 attendees. This figure represents a slight 9.53% decrease compared to the 2023 edition, yet it was still regarded as a positive outcome, considering the country’s socioeconomic context at the time.
Expanding Access and Celebrating Legacy
In 2026, the fair will also launch a book voucher program for schools, funded with an initial contribution of 200 million pesos from Fundación El Libro, with hopes of expanding through partnerships with Argentina’s national, municipal, and provincial governments. A similar voucher program for seniors is also being planned.
To commemorate its 50th anniversary, the fair will feature an entire pavilion dedicated to the celebration, shaped around five strategic themes that will include exhibitions, musical performances, immersive installations, and multidisciplinary programming for children and young audiences.
The exhibition will also pay tribute to other major book fairs — Guadalajara, Frankfurt, Madrid, Bogotá, New York, and Bologna — as well as literary festivals such as Centroamérica Cuenta, Hay Festival Global, and the Gabo Festival.
Looking Ahead
Before the official opening, from April 21 to 23, the fair will once again host its Professional Days, which annually bring together publishers, booksellers, and literary agents from more than 30 countries.
As part of its international promotion, Fundación El Libro will also present the upcoming edition of the Buenos Aires International Book Fair at the Guadalajara International Book Fair this week.
